The Rule Most Travelers Miss: Seats and Bags Share the Same Space
A vehicle’s passenger count assumes light bags, and its luggage count assumes empty seats. You rarely get both maximums at once.
- In a sedan, the trunk is fixed. Three passengers and three large suitcases is a genuinely full car — a fourth suitcase rides on someone’s lap
- In an SUV, the third row and the cargo area compete. Fill all six seats and only the space behind the last row is left for bags. Fold the third row and the same SUV swallows a week of luggage for four or five people
- Oversized items — golf bags, strollers, ski bags, garment bags, boxes — take far more room than their count suggests
The simple rule we give every caller: if you’re close to the limit, size up one vehicle. It’s a small difference in price and a big difference in the ride.
